About Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate

At restored Quarry Mill the air hangs heavy with the atmosphere of the Victorian people of Wilmslow who spent their days toiling in quite often cold, damp factories and mills. For here not only can you see illustrated some of the wonders of the Industrial Revolution but you can learn how water and steam played an important part in the evolution of early technology, as well as witnessing scenes from social history.

You will learn of the lives of pauper children, see how they spent their time in the schoolroom, and afterwards, unlike today's children who return to warm homes, fresh food, the luxury of television and computers, these children were set to work clearing up factory floors and doing other countless menial tasks.

The museum is situated in almost 400 acres of countryside where the Styal Estate flourished. It belongs to the National Trust and here you will receive a friendly welcome meeting people who worked in the mill, and who have memories they are happy to share with you.

There is a shop to visit, relaxing riverside and country walks. Best of all though is the refreshing insight into our regional industrial and social heritage, and an era of deprivation, thankfully long since gone.

Quarry Bank Museum is open all the year round and hosts many events.
